Active and Passive Voice - Past Tense


Past  indefinite tense:

Always use past participle (3rd form of verb).

(By) is used as preposition

Helping verbs (was, were)

Examples:

Active voice

Passive voice

Father drove us home.

We were driven home by father.

Aslam pressed my clothes.

My clothes were pressed by Aslam.

The cook prepared the dinner.

The dinner was prepared by the cook.

 

Past continuous tense:

Always use past participle (3rd form of verb).

Helping verbs (was being, were, being)

Examples:

Active voice

Passive voice

I was playing the role.

The role was being played by me.

You were watering the plants.

The plants were being watered by you.

She was writing the story.

The story was being written by me.

 

Past perfect tense:

Always use past participle (3rd form of verb).

(By) is used as preposition

Helping verbs (ha been)

Examples:

Active voice

Passive voice

Mother had prepared the costume.

The costume had been prepared by mother.

I had read the newspaper.

The newspaper had been read by me.

The police had arrested the culprit.

The culprit had been arrested by the police.
