Active and Passive Voice

In academic writings two types of voices are include depending upon the requirement of sentence. The sentence is either an active voice or passive voice. However more often active voices are is used because of its hold and grasp.

Active Voice:

When the subject of a sentence is performing the action the sentence is considered to be in active voice.

Example:

I am playing soccer.

She was writing the letter.

You plucked the forbidden fruit.

In all the above sentences the subject is performing the action.

Passive Voice:

When the subject of a sentence receives an action the sentence is considered to be in passive voice.

Examples:

Soccer is being played by me.

The letter was written by her.

The forbidden fruit was plucked by you.

Rules to convert the Active voice in passive voice

  • The subject switches its place with the object.
  • Use of appropriate helping verb.
  • Past participle (3rd form of verb) is used.
  • “by” is used as a preposition.

Example:

He is drinking water.                    (Active voice)

Water is being drunk by me.      (Passive voice)

(Now we are going to break the sentence)

Subject: He

Object: water

Helping verb: is

Verb: drinking

Switching the place of subject with object                 Water………………………him

Use of appropriate helping verb                                               Water is being……………..him

Past participle (3rd form of verb)                                   Water is being drunk……..him

Using “by” as a preposition                                            Water is being drunk by me.

To change a sentence from active to passive voice one has to follow few rules. Firstly we are going to understand the transformation of helping verbs in different sentences.
